Monday, November 9th, 2009

With a fast, urbanized and booming economy Wuxi has a nickname in the Republic of China as the ‘the pearl of Lake Tai’. The city is actually split in two halves by Lake Tai, hence the nickname. Belonging to the Jiangsu Province, Wuxi has a history of over 3000 years and was previously heavily in to tin mining.

To enjoy some of the best lake scenery in China, Li Garden is the place to visit. Located in the southern most part of Wuxi, this garden is surrounded by Wuli Lake in three places. Here you can find a typical Chinese garden, which was built in the first part of the 20th century. With a beautiful view of the hills, Li Garden proffers a sense of peace and tranquillity.

In the middle of the garden one can find man-made hills which vary in size and styles. The stone paved paths that take one through the Li Garden can be akin to walking through a maze. There is something to found and explored in each pocket, nook and corner to this garden. While some places like the Four Seasons Pavilion are beautiful to look at, visitors will find the plants and flowers alongside just as enchanting.

The Four Seasons Pavilion is a representation of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each season has a significant flower planted alongside it. For the Spring Pavilion there lays plum blossoms, Oleanders for Summer, osmanthus for Autumn and for Winter there are calyx.

Enjoy the poeticism of a traditional Chinese garden when visiting Li Garden. The designs of such gardens are meant to provide spiritual utopia, and a means for one to connect to nature. Plants are used as symbols, for instance bamboo is said to represent a strong character, whilst a lotus flower is a reflection of purity.
